Lee County has an estimated 100,000 vessels, one half are registered recreational vessels, and the rest are unregistered vessels. The “rules of the road” for boats are different that the “rules of the road” for vehicles and knowing them can make you safer on our crowded waterways.
Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron/America’s Boating Club Cape Coral will be offering Boat Handling: Rules of the Road on Monday, Oct 6, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
Rules of the Road is a two-hour seminar that takes an in-depth look at both Inland and International Navigation rules. Boaters on the Florida coast need to know the subtle differences between these rules. The Inland Rules end as soon as you cross the “Line of Demarcation” and enter the Gulf where the International Rules begin.
Under the Florida Freedom Boater Act, owners registering or renewing their boat with the state must now affirm that they “…I understand that it is my legal responsibility as the owner and/or operator of this vessel to ensure compliance with all applicable maritime safety laws and regulations.” Taking the Rules of the Road will help you learn when to use your “turn signals” to let other boaters know your intent when meeting head on and overtaking. The seminar also covers some if the other Florida rules and regulations.
Registration is available on-line at www.ccsaps.org or by visiting our offices. All currently offered courses and seminars are also list online including America’s Boating Course which covers the information you need to know to obtain a State of Florida Boater Education I.D. Card. Also, our popular two-hour Southwest Florida Boating seminar. The Southwest Florida Boating covers some of the many questions our members are asked about boating here.
