Ask the Experts — Fishing Gear

Check out the favorite gear from our Fishing Reporters out in the waves.

From Captain Barry Cuda’s — My Favorite Lure

A frequent question is “what’s your favorite lure?” I’ve fished them all (just about), and they’re ALL good. Keep in mind, that a lure’s primary purpose is not to catch fish — it’s to catch fishermen! But the good ones catch fish and will be re-purchased over and over.

My go-to lures for all kinds of fish are the Berkley Gulps. The Jerk Shad and Swimming Mullet in White or Pink Shade have given me the most consistent success in all conditions. They are soft plastic, and flavored. As a result you get restrikes when clumsy fish miss on the first try. A couple of times, I have caught snook on the fifth strike!

With hard plastic or wood, you’re not likely to get another chance. Do your own research. When you find fish, and have a “captive audience” try different lures, colors, and retrieves to find out what they like that day.

Captain Matt Davie’s Favorite Rods & Supplies

Two shops came to mind for Captain Davie when it comes to fishing gear. For Rods, the Captain’s go-to is Bull Bay Rods, a supplier of rods for nearly any type of angler excursion. From inshore and freshwater rods to custom rods and reels, you can be sure to find whatever you could need. For a local spot when it’s time to head out for the day or night of fishing, Davie also recommends Lee Fisher Sports, a leading provider of fishing supplies based in Tampa, Fl. Whether you’re look to try a new set of hooks or bait, or you’ve got a ripped net, Lee Fisher’s got it. You can order for pick up in store or delivery, accessible wherever and whenever.
